Begin with the National Archaeological Museum, whose Farnese works and finds from Pompeii and Herculaneum explain much of the region’s ancient art. Then read the city itself along Spaccanapoli and Via dei Tribunali, where churches, cloisters and palaces follow the Greek street grid.

For later periods, the Museo di Capodimonte gives the broadest art collection, while the Teatro di San Carlo anchors the former royal quarter. Napoli Underground shows how quarrying and water systems created another city beneath the streets. Treat Herculaneum as a separate rail excursion rather than squeezing it into a central walking day.
