Why visit Naples National Archaeological Museum

MANN is the place to see the objects removed from the Vesuvian towns in one argument: the Farnese Hercules and Bull, the Alexander Mosaic, frescoes from Pompeii and Herculaneum, bronzes from the Villa of the Papyri and a major Egyptian collection. The museum’s distinction is the connection between a royal collection and the archaeology of southern Italy.

Visit if you:

  • want to understand what you will see at Pompeii or Herculaneum
  • care about Roman copies of Greek sculpture and ancient interiors
  • can give a large museum several focused hours
  • want the Farnese collection beside the objects found in Campania

Skip it if you:

  • have only a short Naples stop and want open-air ruins
  • need every gallery to be open on one fixed route
  • prefer a small specialist museum to several collections in one building

Visit Responsibly

MANN’s floors and cases protect objects that cannot be replaced. Keep bags in the lockers when required, do not touch sculpture or display cases, and follow staff directions when a gallery closes or a route changes.

Free-admission days concentrate demand and can close rooms for safety. If the visit is about one collection, choose an ordinary day or book online rather than treating free entry as a guarantee that every gallery will be available.

The museum is a working conservation institution. Famous works or whole galleries may be unavailable during conservation and refurbishment. Follow the published route, keep behind barriers and do not lean over temporary work zones.

Groups of 10–30 must book in advance. Keeping groups within that rule helps prevent the narrow circulation spaces from becoming a queue that blocks visitors studying the galleries.

Hours and tickets

MANN is open 9.00–19.30, with last entry at 18.30; it is closed on Tuesdays. It opens on public holidays except 1 January and 25 December, with exceptional Tuesday openings and a Wednesday closure listed by the operator for some 2026 holidays. Check the current room schedule before setting a route.

What is free

The whole museum is inside the admission system, but free entry applies to visitors under 18, Italian teachers, visitors with disabilities and the operator’s listed free-admission days, including the first Sunday of the month and specified national dates. On free days, collect a same-day ticket at the office; the Egyptian, Secret Cabinet and Magna Graecia galleries are closed for safety.

The normal ticket is €20; ages 18–25 pay €2. Campania Artecard holders pay €10 after using their free entries. A group of 10–30 must book and buy in advance. Tickets include the permanent galleries open to the public and temporary exhibitions unless stated otherwise.

Check gallery closures. Through 30 November 2026 the Mosaic collection and Secret Cabinet are closed for refurbishment; the Epigraphic collection is also closed. Villa dei Papiri and Numismatics have reduced hours, and upper Prehistory and Magna Graecia rotate. Consult the room schedule on the day.

Check the entrance. The operator says the entrance and ticket office are temporarily at the western door during restructuring works. Large luggage and some backpacks go in the free lockers; bulky wheeled suitcases cannot be stored. Allow about 180 minutes for a selective visit and longer for a full survey.

Two turnstile rules. Groups of 10–30 must buy in advance even when entitled to free admission. Enter through the temporary western door and check the room schedule first: a ticket does not override the current Mosaic, Secret Cabinet or Epigraphic closures.

When to Visit

Choose MANN for a wet or very hot day: the museum provides a long indoor window from 9.00 to 19.30, though Tuesdays are closed. The first opening hours are useful if you want the Farnese rooms before school and tour groups; late afternoon works for a shorter collection-focused visit, but galleries begin closing operations before 19.30. Free-admission days reduce the ticket cost but can close selected rooms and cannot be booked in advance. Check the room calendar for restoration closures before travelling.
