Where the Crowds Are
Highest visitor pressure: the Decumani around Via dei Tribunali, San Gregorio Armeno and Spaccanapoli; the National Archaeological Museum; Via Toledo; Piazza del Plebiscito; and the port approaches. These zones concentrate famous sights, shopping and transport, so short bottlenecks matter more than citywide crowding.
More room without leaving the city: Capodimonte and parts of the Rione Sanità spread visits over larger sites and residential streets. Posillipo and the Gaiola coast feel less compressed, but access is slower and protected-area rules limit capacity.
How to rebalance a day: enter the old centre early, reserve a fixed museum for midday, and move to a higher or coastal district later. Do not use quieter residential lanes as shortcuts for large groups. September observances and special May openings can shift pressure to churches or civic buildings that are calm at other times.
