Karnataka Region Guide

Why Plan a Trip to Karnataka the Smart Way

Karnataka has the best ruins in India, the country’s technology capital, and a coast and hill range that almost nobody outside India visits.

Hampi is the reason to come. The capital of the Vijayanagara empire was one of the largest cities in the world in the sixteenth century, sacked in 1565 and never reoccupied, and its temples, bazaars and palaces now stand across a boulder landscape of enormous granite outcrops that looks like nowhere else on earth. It is UNESCO-listed and you can spend days in it.

South of it, the Hoysala temples at Belur and Halebidu are carved in soapstone to a degree of detail that has to be seen close up.

Mysore has a palace lit by ninety-seven thousand bulbs, Bengaluru has India’s best bar scene, and Coorg grows the coffee.

Cities and Areas

How to Experience Karnataka

Hampi

Three or four days. The Virupaksha temple, still in worship; the Vittala complex with its stone chariot and musical pillars; the Hazara Rama reliefs; the royal enclosure with its elephant stables and stepped tank; and Matanga Hill at sunrise, which gives the whole city at once. Hire a bicycle or a moped, and cross the river to the quieter side.

The Hoysala temples

Belur, Halebidu and Somanathapura, built in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries in chloritic schist — soft enough to carve like wood and hardening with exposure. The friezes run in horizontal bands of elephants, horsemen and narrative, and the bracket figures are carved almost free of the stone. UNESCO-listed in 2023.

Badami and Pattadakal

Earlier and rougher: Chalukya cave temples cut into red sandstone cliffs above a tank, and a UNESCO-listed group of temples where northern and southern architectural styles were tried side by side.

Mysore and the south

The palace, Chamundi hill, and Nagarhole and Bandipur for elephant and tiger.

Coast and Ghats

Gokarna’s beaches, the Jog falls, and the coffee country of Coorg and Chikmagalur.

Where to Find Authentic Cultural and Historical Character

Karnataka combines a very old courtly and temple culture with the most globally connected city in India.

Bengaluru

A garden city and retirement town that became India’s technology capital from the 1990s, and now holds a very large software industry, a young migrant population from across the country, and a genuine independent music, food and bar culture that is unusual in India. Its growth has badly outpaced its infrastructure, and traffic and water are perpetual subjects.

Kannada

The state language has a literary tradition going back over a thousand years and more Jnanpith awards — India’s highest literary honour — than any other Indian language. Language politics are live, and Bengaluru’s migrant influx has made them more so.

Temple dynasties

The Chalukyas, Hoysalas and Vijayanagara rulers each left a distinct architecture, and the state contains the experimental ground where the northern and southern Indian temple styles met.

Coastal Karnataka

Tulu-speaking, with its own traditions including yakshagana theatre and the buffalo race kambala.

Responsible Travel Tips

Hampi is a living landscape as well as an archaeological one — villages, farms and a working temple sit among the ruins, and the Virupaksha temple has been in continuous worship for over a thousand years. Do not climb on carved structures, and be aware that clearance of the bazaar settlements has been contentious.

Bouldering at Hampi has become popular; use established problems, avoid chalking historic surfaces, and do not climb on anything with carving.

The Western Ghats here hold the largest wild elephant and tiger populations in India. Book safaris through the forest department at Nagarhole and Bandipur, keep to vehicle rules, and note that elephant-human conflict is a serious local issue rather than a spectacle.

Coffee estates in Coorg and Chikmagalur mostly grow under shade, which is good for birds; homestays on working estates put money into that model.

Water: Bengaluru has a serious and worsening supply crisis.

When to Visit Karnataka

October to March is the season across the state: dry, warm and comfortable, with the Ghats green after the monsoon and the coast at its best.

Hampi is best from November to February — the site has almost no shade and the boulders radiate heat, so it is genuinely punishing from March onward.

April and May are hot everywhere except the hill stations.

June to September is the monsoon, very heavy on the coast and in the Ghats, where Agumbe records some of the highest rainfall in India. The waterfalls at Jog are at full volume, which is spectacular, and travel becomes difficult.

Mysore Dasara in September or October is the state’s great festival and fills the city for ten days.

Coffee blossom in Coorg in March or April scents whole valleys for a few days after the first rain.
