Practical information for visiting Karnataka

Air: Bengaluru is the principal international gateway; Mangaluru serves the coast, and regional airports can shorten selected interior routes.

Rail: Major cities and several heritage bases are rail-connected. Use the exact station and plan the last road leg to Hampi, temple circuits, hills or reserves.

Road: KSRTC links principal towns, while a planned car or taxi is often the most efficient way to join a cluster of monuments or rural stays.

Digital access: Cellular data is useful for route and booking checks, but download maps, tickets, accommodation details and emergency contacts before forest, hill or remote heritage travel.

Use ordinary precautions in crowded markets, bus and rail terminals, festival routes and busy monument entrances. Keep valuables secured and use recognised booking channels.

For a taxi or arranged car, confirm the vehicle and destination before leaving. On long road transfers, share the route and avoid pressuring a driver to speed, especially at night, in rain or through forest corridors.

At beaches, waterfalls and hill viewpoints, follow local barriers and current weather warnings. Monsoon water and poor visibility can turn an informal shortcut into a rescue situation.

Only enter wildlife areas through authorised arrangements. Never leave a vehicle, approach animals or stop on a forest road where it is prohibited.

Heat is the main practical health constraint on northern and interior heritage routes from March into May. Move long walks to the morning, drink regularly and use shade before fatigue becomes obvious.

During the southwest monsoon, heavy rain can produce slippery stone, reduced visibility, swollen watercourses and local road disruption, particularly on the coast and in the Ghats. Respect closures.

Karnataka's health department monitors mosquito-borne illness across the state. Use practical bite precautions in wet and humid conditions and follow current public-health advice rather than a fixed seasonal assumption.

Choose drinking water and food from sources you trust, especially during heat or remote travel. Carry regular medication and allow extra supply for a long circuit.

Woodland and tiger-reserve access is controlled. Stay on designated routes, follow the guide or reserve authority's instruction, keep noise low and never feed wildlife.

Smoking is prohibited in public areas under the visitor guidance published by Karnataka Tourism, and illegal drugs carry serious penalties. Use licensed premises for alcohol and never drink before driving.

Ask before photographing a person closely, a ritual, a working market stall or private plantation activity.

For a lost passport, contact local police and the relevant embassy or consulate. Keep copies of identification, insurance, tickets and accommodation contacts available offline.
