Asia Discovery Guide

Why Plan a Trip to Asia

Changed

Asia offers an unmatched range of travel experiences within a single continent — trekking in the Himalayas, exploring ancient temple complexes in Cambodia and Japan, diving among some of the world's richest coral reefs in Southeast Asia, and experiencing hyper-modern cities in Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, all without leaving the region.

It is also, for many travelers, where budget goes furthest: destinations across South and Southeast Asia remain some of the most affordable in the world for genuinely high-quality travel, while East Asian cities offer world-class food, transit, and infrastructure most travelers rank among the best anywhere.

    Responsible Travel Tips

    Changed

Several of Asia's most iconic sites — Angkor Wat, parts of Bali, and popular stretches of the Himalayan trekking routes among them — face genuine overtourism pressure. Visiting during shoulder season, spreading time across a region's lesser-known sites rather than only its single most famous one, and booking through local operators all help spread tourism's benefits (and its footprint) more evenly.

    • Wildlife tourism requires real scrutiny here — elephant riding and performing-animal shows, still marketed to tourists in parts of Southeast Asia, involve well-documented animal welfare concerns; ethical sanctuaries that only offer observation, not riding or performances, are the better alternative.
    • Religious sites across the continent — temples, mosques, shrines — often have specific dress codes (covered shoulders and knees are common) and photography restrictions; checking before visiting avoids an awkward turn-away at the entrance and, more importantly, respects the site's own significance to local worshippers.
    • Plastic waste is a visible, real issue in parts of the region without robust waste infrastructure, particularly popular island and coastal destinations — carrying a reusable water bottle and declining single-use plastic where possible makes a genuine difference.

    Best Destinations By Month

    Changed

Asia is too large and climatically varied for one single "best time to visit" — the right season depends heavily on which part of the continent.

Southeast Asia (Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore) runs on a wet-and-dry cycle rather than four seasons — the dry season (roughly November to April, varying by exact country) is by far the most popular and reliable window for travel, while the wet season brings heavy afternoon downpours and, in the Philippines and Vietnam specifically, typhoon risk.

South Asia (India, Nepal, Pakistan) is dominated by the monsoon, which arrives roughly June through September across most of the region — outside this window (October to March) is generally the more comfortable and popular travel season, though the Himalayan trekking season in Nepal specifically is narrower still (spring and autumn, avoiding both monsoon rains and winter snow at altitude).

East Asia (China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong) has four distinct seasons much like Europe or North America — spring (cherry blossom season in Japan and South Korea, March to April) and autumn (fall foliage, October to November) are the most popular and most pleasant travel windows, with hot, humid summers and cold winters in between.
