A concise introduction to Noli, its geography, history and culture.
Introduction
Noli is a comune of 2,444 inhabitants on the Riviera di Ponente, in the province of Savona, set in an inlet closed to the east by the island of Bergeggi and to the south-west by its own cape, at the mouth of the Luminella torrent. Its 9.67 square kilometres include the inland frazioni of Tosse and Voze.
It was a republic for six hundred and five years. The Republic of Noli was constituted on 7 August 1192 by decree of Henry VI of Swabia and ended on 2 December 1797 with Napoleon's Italian campaign. It was a maritime republic — but not one of the famous four. The term repubbliche marinare normally means Amalfi, Genoa, Pisa and Venice, whose arms are on the ensign of the Italian Navy; besides those, the record names Ancona, Gaeta, "la piccola Noli" and, in Dalmatia, Ragusa. Noli is the smallest of them: 4 square kilometres at its greatest extent, with about 1,500 people in the eighteenth century.
The town was founded three times. First on the summit of Monte Ursino, where the castle stands; then beside the church of San Paragorio; and finally inside the wall circuit that still encloses it.
It is still a fishing village, which on this coast is unusual. Noli is one of the few coastal borghi to keep local fishermen, who go out at night in small motorboats and come back in the morning. It is a member of I borghi più belli d'Italia and holds the Bandiera blu.

Frequently asked questions
Was Noli really a maritime republic?
Yes, but not one of the famous four. The term repubbliche marinare normally means Amalfi, Genoa, Pisa and Venice, whose arms appear on the ensign of the Italian Navy. Besides those, the record names Ancona, Gaeta, "la piccola Noli" and, in Dalmatia, Ragusa. Noli is the smallest: about 4 square kilometres at its greatest extent.
How long did the republic last?
605 years. It was constituted on 7 August 1192 by decree of Henry VI of Swabia and ended on 2 December 1797 with Napoleon's Italian campaign.
Is it true the town was founded three times?
That is what the record says: first on the summit of Monte Ursino, where the castle is; second beside the church of San Paragorio; third inside the present walls.
Are there really seventy towers?
There were. In the thirteenth century Noli built more than seventy town towers along with its wall. Several survive, mostly built into later houses; the thirteenth-century Torre del Comune and Torre della Marina are the ones usually picked out.
Can I go into the castle?
No opening hour or admission is published for it by the comune or anyone else. The encyclopaedia describes it as restored ruins in municipal ownership — though that article carries an explicit warning that it is unsourced, so treat the detail cautiously.
Which church is the cathedral?
The concattedrale di San Pietro, since 1572. Before that it was San Paragorio, outside the walls, which has been an Italian national monument since 28 December 1890.
Who are the plaques under the loggia for?
Dante Alighieri, who names Noli in the Purgatorio; Cristoforo Colombo, on 31 May 1476, leaving for Portugal; and Giordano Bruno, in 1576.
What should I eat?
The cicciarelli, which carry a Slow Food Presidium, and the local white, Lumassina, from the valleys between Noli and Finale Ligure.
