Discover Agra
A concise introduction to Agra, its geography, history and culture.
Introduction
Agra is a city on the Yamuna where Mughal power became architecture at extraordinary scale. The Taj Mahal is the defining work, but it belongs to a wider sequence of river gardens, imperial tombs and the red-sandstone city inside Agra Fort.
The rewarding visit follows those relationships. Itimad-ud-Daulah, Mehtab Bagh and Ram Bagh explain the riverfront. Sikandra extends the dynastic story west, while Fatehpur Sikri preserves Akbar's planned capital beyond the modern city. Together, the district holds three World Heritage properties.
Agra is easy to reach by rail and road, yet its sights are not one walkable cluster. Early starts help with heat and visitor pressure. Two or three days reveal far more than a same-day photograph and departure.

Frequently asked questions
How many days does Agra need? Two full days cover the Taj–Fort corridor and Fatehpur Sikri without combining them into one rush. A third adds Sikandra, trans-Yamuna gardens or a nature excursion.
Is the Taj Mahal open on Friday? It is closed to ordinary visitors on Fridays and opens for mosque prayer during the stated period. Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri remain alternatives.
When is the best time? February, March and November offer the strongest general balance. Winter can bring fog, April warms quickly, May and June are extremely hot, and July through September is wetter.
Can I visit from Delhi in one day? Rail and expressway connections make a day trip possible, but it compresses the city into one or two monuments. Stay overnight if Fatehpur Sikri or the river gardens matter.
Does the Metro reach the Taj Mahal? Yes. The operational priority stretch includes Taj East Gate and continues to Mankameshwar near the Fort corridor. Check the current map for later extensions.
Can vehicles reach the Taj gates? Petrol and diesel vehicles stop outside a 500-metre zone. Battery buses and golf carts connect the designated parking areas with the eastern and western gates.
Is Agra accessible? Wheelchairs are available at Taj entry gates, and major approaches have broad paths. Historic thresholds, surfaces and distances still vary, so verify each site and gate separately.
Should I buy every ticket in advance? Use the official ASI portal for current categories and fees. Advance online purchase reduces ticket-window uncertainty, but security and entry checks still apply.
