Bangalore

Discover Bangalore

A concise introduction to Bangalore, its geography, history and culture.

Introduction

Karnataka's capital, Bangalore—officially Bengaluru—sits more than 900 metres above sea level on the southern Deccan Plateau. Its visitor landscape is unusually layered: the market streets associated with Kempe Gowda's sixteenth-century town, gardens developed under Mysore rulers and British superintendents, the former cantonment, post-independence civic architecture and a technology economy with national reach.

The city rewards selective exploration. Vidhana Soudha, Cubbon Park and the central museums form one useful cluster; Lalbagh and the old market quarter form another. Metro and bus routes help with long movements, but road congestion and uneven footways make geographical discipline important. Treat Bangalore as a working metropolis in India, not simply a gateway to the rest of the state.

Frequently asked questions

Are Bangalore and Bengaluru the same place? Yes. Bengaluru is the official Kannada-derived name; Bangalore remains common in English and in established institutional names.

How long should I allow? Three days covers the central civic cluster, Lalbagh and the old city, plus one neighbourhood or museum thread. Add a day for Bannerghatta or a slower exploration.

When is the best time? November through February offers the mildest, driest general conditions. September and October have the highest normal rainfall.

Can I walk between the main sights? Walk within one cluster, not across the whole city. Metro, buses and short road transfers connect the clusters.

How do I reach the airport? BMTC Vayu Vajra airport buses and authorised road transport are the established visitor options. Allow a generous traffic margin.

What should I prioritise on a first visit? Vidhana Soudha and Cubbon Park, Lalbagh, and the old market-and-fort area reveal three different layers of the city.

Is Bangalore only a technology city? No. Technology is important, but the city also has pre-colonial, Mysore, cantonment, legislative, botanical, artistic and research histories.

What language is most useful? Kannada is the state language. English is common in major visitor and business settings; carrying the written address still prevents confusion.
