The Sala dell'Albergo
The smaller upper room holds the paintings Tintoretto made first, after winning the commission in 1564 by installing a finished ceiling panel rather than submitting a sketch like his competitors. Its Crucifixion covers an entire wall and is generally held to be his most ambitious single work; Christ before Pilate and The Glorification of St Roch hang in the same room.
The Sala Superiore
The great upper hall carries Old Testament scenes across the ceiling and New Testament scenes around the walls, so that reading the room from above to eye level traces the biblical narrative from the Fall to the Redemption. Mirrors are laid out for visitors to study the ceiling without looking up throughout.
Beyond Tintoretto
The building also holds works by Titian and Palma il Giovane, and a set of 17th-century carved wooden panels by Francesco Pianta in the Chapter House -- allegorical figures, one of which is traditionally read as a caricature of Tintoretto himself. The adjoining church of San Rocco contains further Tintoretto canvases and is covered by the same visit.
