Many buildings beside Venice's canals use timber-pile foundations, but construction varies by site, period and ground conditions. Closely spaced piles were driven into waterlogged lagoon sediments and supported timber platforms, foundation courses and masonry above. The oxygen-poor submerged environment slows biological decay; the wood did not simply petrify, and not every building follows an identical foundation section.
The palaces along the Grand Canal also record changing architectural preferences, from Veneto-Byzantine forms and Venetian Gothic tracery to Renaissance and Baroque façades. Their water entrances were functional front doors in a city where important arrivals took place by boat.
Four bridges now cross the Grand Canal: Rialto, Scalzi, Accademia and Costituzione. They belong to different periods and should be understood as additions to a route that historically depended heavily on boats and ferries.
Site Plan and Features
The Grand Canal
The Grand Canal curves through the historic centre from the railway-station area to the basin beside Santa Maria della Salute. It is Venice's principal water-traffic corridor and is lined with palaces, churches, warehouses and civic buildings from different periods. Four bridges cross it: Rialto, Scalzi, Accademia and Costituzione.
Smaller canals

Smaller canals, or rii, separate the built islands and connect neighbourhoods with the wider lagoon network. Some follow older tidal channels; others were modified, narrowed, filled or reinforced as the city developed. Their walls and canal beds require continuing maintenance.
Boats on the canals

ACTV vaporetti provide scheduled public transport on the larger waterways. Private water taxis, work boats, emergency craft, delivery vessels, gondolas and the small traghetti that cross the Grand Canal use the network for different purposes. A vaporetto is a public water bus, not a water taxi.
Landscape
Venice sits within the Venetian Lagoon, a large, shallow enclosed bay on the Adriatic coast, separated from the open sea by a chain of narrow barrier islands -- the Lido and Pellestrina chief among them -- broken by a few inlets (bocche di porto) where tides flow in and out twice daily.
The city's canals are not a purely artificial creation -- they largely follow the natural pattern of tidal channels that already existed between the lagoon's marshy islands before anyone settled there, widened and deepened over centuries rather than dug from nothing.
That same lagoon geography now works against the city: land subsidence and rising sea levels have made the gap between normal tides and flood-level "acqua alta" events measurably smaller than it was a century ago, a slow-moving shift the MOSE barrier system exists specifically to hold off.
