Why Visit Greenville the Smart Way
Greenville is a small county seat in western Ohio with a claim on two pieces of American history that are out of all proportion to its size.
The Treaty of Greene Ville was signed here in 1795, ending the Northwest Indian War and opening most of what became Ohio to settlement. It is one of the consequential documents of American westward expansion, and it was negotiated on this ground.
And Annie Oakley was born in Darke County, learned to shoot here as a child feeding her family, and is buried a few miles outside town. The Garst Museum holds the largest collection of her possessions anywhere.
Beyond that it is a handsome courthouse town with a nineteenth-century square, a working grist mill and one of the largest county fairs in Ohio.
How to Experience Greenville
Garst Museum
The county historical museum, and far better than that description suggests. It holds the National Annie Oakley Center, with the largest collection of her guns, costumes, letters and possessions in existence, alongside a treaty gallery, a Lowell Thomas collection and period rooms. Allow two hours.
The square and the courthouse
The Darke County Courthouse of 1874, an ornate Second Empire building with a clock tower and a statue of Justice, stands on Broadway Street with the nineteenth-century commercial blocks around it.
Bear’s Mill
A grist mill of 1849 east of town, still grinding flour on French buhr stones and still driven by water, with a gallery upstairs and a millrace and woods outside.
Annie Oakley sites
Her grave at Brock Cemetery, the memorial park north of town and the statue on the square.
Eat
The Maid-Rite sandwich shop on Broadway Street, serving loose-meat sandwiches since 1934, with a wall outside encrusted in decades of chewing gum left by customers.

Annie Oakley
Phoebe Ann Mosey was born in Darke County in 1860, began shooting game to feed her family and pay off the family farm, beat a travelling marksman in a match at fifteen and married him, and spent seventeen years with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show as the most famous woman in America. She is the town’s defining figure and is treated with genuine affection rather than as a brand.
Farming
Darke County is consistently among the highest-producing agricultural counties in Ohio, in maize, soya and especially poultry and livestock. The rhythm of the year is agricultural, and the county fair is the social centre of it.
Plain communities
A substantial Amish and Old Order Mennonite population farms in the county, with their own schools, markets and produce auctions.
Manufacturing
KitchenAid stand mixers have been made in Greenville since the 1940s, and the factory is a significant local employer.
Responsible Travel Tips
The treaty is not a neutral subject. It was signed after a military defeat and it transferred the homelands of the Shawnee, Miami Nation, Lenape, Wyandot and other nations. The museum presents it, and it is worth engaging with what the document actually did rather than treating it as local colour.
Buy local. Greenville has an unusually intact independent main street for a town of its size, and the county has a substantial Amish and Mennonite farming population whose produce, furniture and baked goods are sold directly.
Rural roads: this is farming country, with horse-drawn buggies, slow machinery and no verges. Pass wide and slowly, and expect to be held up in harvest.
Bear’s Mill is a working nineteenth-century mill kept going by a small trust; buying the flour it grinds is what funds it.
When to Visit Greenville
May, September and October are the most comfortable months, with warm days, low humidity and the countryside at its best.
Late July brings Annie Oakley Days, the town’s own festival, with a shooting contest, a parade and a reenactment.
Late August is the Great Darke County Fair, one of the largest county fairs in Ohio and the busiest week of the local year.
June to August is hot and humid with afternoon thunderstorms; western Ohio is open country and there is little shade.
December to February is cold and grey with modest snow, and the town is quiet.
April and May are the peak of severe weather season here.

Greenville is inexpensive, and the museum admission is modest. The practical constraint is not cost but the small number of places to stay, which is why many visitors base themselves in Dayton, forty minutes east.
