From medieval house to literary landmark

The tower house is documented from 1351 and was used as an inn. It became associated with the Capulets by the eighteenth century, long after Luigi da Porto's 1531 story and Shakespeare's later play had established the lovers' legend. The City of Verona acquired the property in 1905.

Antonio Avena directed the restoration of 1939–1940, reshaping the complex to evoke a medieval setting and adding the balcony assembled from fourteenth-century marble remains. The result is an influential twentieth-century interpretation of a medieval house, not the preserved home of a documented Juliet.
