The hill was settled by the sixth to fifth centuries BCE and later formed part of Roman Verona's monumental landscape. It subsequently held a church dedicated to Saint Peter and fortified structures. Austrian authorities built the present neo-Romanesque barracks between 1854 and 1856 as part of Verona's defensive system.
