Roman origins

The amphitheatre was built around the middle of the first century CE near important roads outside Roman Verona. It held gladiatorial contests, animal hunts and other public spectacles for audiences drawn from the city and surrounding territory.

Dismantling, reuse and survival

Parts of the outer ring were removed in late antiquity, and the Arena later supplied stone for other construction. Earthquakes and centuries of reuse also altered it, but the inner structure survived and continued to host civic events, tournaments and entertainments rather than becoming an abandoned ruin.

From monument to opera venue

Restoration and archaeological interest grew from the Renaissance onward. In 1913 a performance of Aida for the centenary of Verdi's birth established the tradition that became the Arena di Verona Opera Festival.
