Origins

The land here was marsh, lagoon and sandbar at the mouth of the Tagliamento, and was not permanently settled in any substantial way.

Turning points

Reclamation in the first half of the twentieth century drained the marshes behind the beach and made the ground usable, which is the precondition for everything that followed.

Influential people

Development as a resort began in the 1950s and was rapid; Bibione grew from essentially nothing to one of Italy's largest beach destinations within a few decades.

Cultural evolution

Thermal water was found beneath the town and developed into a spa, which gave the resort a second season and a reason to stay open beyond the summer.

Present-day significance

In 2016 Bibione restricted smoking on its beach, the first Italian resort to do so, and the policy has since been widely copied. It holds Blue Flag certification and is among the highest-volume destinations on the Adriatic.

Publishing will make these pending changes visible on the live page.
