Origins

The summit has been fortified since antiquity -- it commands the hill Feltre is built on, and the routes through the Piave valley.

Turning points

The name attaches the site to Alboin, king of the Lombards, who invaded northern Italy in 568. The association is traditional rather than documented, and the standing fabric is medieval.

Influential people

The castle was the seat of the town's rulers through the Middle Ages, and passed with Feltre through the hands of Treviso, the Scaligeri, the Carraresi and eventually Venice in 1404.

Cultural evolution

The sack of 1510 that destroyed the town also damaged the castle. Under Venice it had no further military purpose and was not rebuilt as a fortress.

Present-day significance

The towers were consolidated and the grounds opened, and the site now functions as the town's viewpoint and occasional event space.
