Architecture

What stands is dominated by two towers: the tall square keep, and the smaller bell tower beside it, both in stone and both medieval.

Fragments of curtain wall survive around them, following the contour of the summit -- the enclosure was shaped by the hill rather than by a designed plan.

The residential and service buildings that would have filled the enclosure are largely gone, which leaves the site reading as towers on a hilltop rather than as a castle.

The position is the architecture: the summit commands the town, the valley and the approaches, and there is no higher ground nearby.
