How to get around Madurai
Getting around
Walk the central ring. Use Meenakshi Temple, nearby markets and selected streets as one focused walking circuit. Watch for uneven surfaces, traffic and dense crowds.
Use short authorised rides. Choose an auto-rickshaw or taxi between the temple, palace, museum and transport gateways. Confirm the fare before departure or use an established booking method.
Match the bus terminal to the route. Check the exact terminal name because Madurai has more than one significant bus facility. Do not rely on a generic “bus stand” instruction.
Allow for temple controls. Expect vehicle restrictions and pedestrian diversions during festivals and security operations.
Keep the return flexible. Allow time to retrieve footwear, clear evening crowds and reach transport.

Railway junction
Madurai Junction is the most convenient major rail gateway for the historic centre. Traffic and luggage still make an authorised ride useful for many accommodations.
Airport
Madurai Airport lies south of the core, about 12 kilometres away under district guidance. Use the current Airports Authority transport page and allow for city traffic.
Buses
City and regional services use several terminals and stopping points. Confirm the full terminal name with the operator, especially for a timed intercity departure.
Historic centre
Walk after reaching the perimeter, but expect security checks, footwear storage and crowded crossings. A vehicle cannot always deliver passengers to the desired temple gate.
Accessibility
Some main approaches are level, and the temple lists wheelchair and battery-vehicle facilities, but thresholds, queues, crowding and restricted zones remain. Ask the operator for the exact current route.
