Practical information for visiting Punjab

Connectivity & Internet

Cellular data and internet access are generally strong in major cities and along principal corridors. Coverage can weaken in rural, wetland and border-edge areas, and power or weather disruption can affect service.

Keep tickets, hotel addresses, passport or identity details, insurance information and emergency contacts available offline. A screenshot of a platform or ceremony time is not proof that an old schedule remains current.

Border districts may have security restrictions, and temporary service limitations can occur. Follow official instructions rather than trying to bypass them.

Hotels, stations and larger cafés often provide Wi-Fi, but public networks should not be used for sensitive transactions without appropriate protection. A local SIM or roaming plan requires the provider's current identity process.

Stay safe (2026 security update)

Punjab is generally travelled through ordinary city and intercity precautions, but the international border creates specific controls. Obey every police, Border Security Force and military sign. Do not photograph checkpoints, sensitive infrastructure or personnel where prohibited, and do not approach an unapproved crossing.

At crowded shrines, stations, markets and festivals, keep valuables secure and agree on a meeting point. Use authorised transport and confirm the vehicle and driver.

Demonstrations, processions and road blockades can affect movement. Avoid confrontations and follow local authority instructions. Border ceremonies can be altered or suspended for operational reasons.

Heat, fog, poor air quality, lightning and flooded roads are often more immediate risks than crime. Check live official warnings and keep insurance and emergency contacts offline.

Health considerations

Seek personalised pre-travel medical advice from a qualified clinician. Carry regular medicines in original packaging and enough supply for delays.

From April through June, heat illness is a serious risk. Reduce midday activity, drink safely, use shade and respond early to dizziness, confusion, headache or unusual weakness. Call emergency services for severe symptoms.

Monsoon conditions increase mosquito exposure and can affect water and food hygiene. Use an effective repellent, choose freshly cooked food and drink safe water.

Winter fog and October–November pollution episodes can worsen respiratory conditions. Consult CPCB air-quality information and limit exposure according to clinical advice.

Road travel is a practical health risk: use seat belts where fitted, avoid fatigued or impaired drivers and do not schedule long night transfers merely to save a hotel night.

Local laws & etiquette

At gurdwaras, cover the head, remove shoes, wash as instructed and dress modestly. Tobacco, alcohol and intoxicants are prohibited on the premises. Never touch or pose with sacred objects, and follow local rules for photography and seating.

At langar, accept a manageable portion, avoid waste and follow the sevadars. Donations and volunteering should go through the institution rather than an unsolicited intermediary.

Ask before photographing people, ceremonies, private homes, farms or craft work. At memorials of Partition, Jallianwala Bagh and later violence, avoid celebratory poses.

Border and military restrictions are mandatory. A camera-friendly crowd does not make every direction safe to photograph.

Protected wetlands have access and wildlife rules. Do not feed animals, use playback or leave authorised routes. Follow current alcohol, driving and public-conduct laws, which can differ from assumptions formed in a hotel or private venue.

Emergency information

Dial 112 for urgent police, fire, medical or rescue assistance in Punjab. Give the district, nearest town, road, station, gurdwara gate, wetland access point or other precise landmark.

In a religious complex, station, museum, border venue or protected area, alert on-site security or staff as well. Follow instructions and do not cross a restricted line to help unless directed.

Keep identity, insurance, medicines, accommodation details and emergency contacts available offline. Share an intercity itinerary with someone you trust.

For severe heat, dense fog, lightning, heavy rain or air-quality episodes, use India Meteorological Department and Central Pollution Control Board information. Border operations and ceremony access must come from current authorities, not old visitor posts.
