Discover Punjab

Introduction

Punjab is a northwestern state of India, bordered by Pakistan and shaped by the Sutlej, Beas and Ravi river systems. Its present boundaries cover only the Indian part of the wider historic Punjab; Chandigarh serves as the state capital but is a separate Union Territory shared with Haryana.

Amritsar brings Harmandir Sahib, Jallianwala Bagh and Partition memory into a dense urban pilgrimage centre. Anandpur Sahib and Rupnagar open another historical corridor along the Shivalik foothills, while Patiala and Kapurthala preserve distinct princely legacies. Between them lie intensely cultivated plains, industrial cities, village networks and internationally recognised wetlands. A good trip chooses two clusters, respects religious routines and keeps spare time for heat, fog, festival pressure or transport disruption.

Frequently asked questions

Is Chandigarh in Punjab? No. It is a separate Union Territory and the shared capital of Punjab and Haryana, though it is a useful eastern gateway.

How long does Punjab need? Four days can support Amritsar well. Seven to ten days allows a second corridor such as Anandpur Sahib, Patiala or Kapurthala without constant transfers.

When is the easiest season? November through February is generally coolest, but winter fog can disrupt transport. March is often a useful alternative.

Is Punjab only a Sikh pilgrimage destination? No. Sikh sacred history is central, but the state also holds Partition memory, princely towns, farm and industrial landscapes, crafts and wetlands.

Can anyone visit a gurdwara? Generally yes, provided visitors follow the site's rules on head covering, shoes, modest conduct and prohibited substances.

Do I need a car? Not for the main city corridor. A hired car helps with wetlands, village stays and dispersed sites.

Is the Attari border ceremony guaranteed? No. Timing and access can change for security or operational reasons; confirm current official information.

What language is most useful? Punjabi is official, Hindi is widely understood and English is common in many visitor services.
