How to get around Punjab
Getting around
Rail works well among Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Patiala and other major centres, but not every useful pairing is direct. Search the exact station and train on Indian Railways rather than relying on a generic city label.
Punjab Roadways, PUNBUS, PRTC and private operators serve intercity routes. Bus facilities and booking systems vary, so confirm the departure stand and current service.
A car and driver is useful for Harike, village accommodation, border-history routes and multi-stop days. Use an authorised provider, agree on inclusions and avoid schedules that require unsafe night driving or long heat exposure.
Within cities, auto-rickshaws, cycle-rickshaws, taxis and app-based services vary by place. Amritsar's historic core is best handled partly on foot, while sacred and memorial precincts may restrict vehicle access.

Gateways
Amritsar airport is the strongest air gateway for western Punjab. Chandigarh airport can support Anandpur Sahib, Rupnagar, Patiala and the eastern side, but Chandigarh itself is outside the state. Other airports and routes are more limited and should be checked with the Airports Authority of India and airline.
Rail
Reserve long-distance trains early during festivals and cooler months. Allow for winter fog delays and verify the exact station, platform information and service status.
Road
Major plains corridors are straightforward, but dense traffic, tractors, fog and night visibility can slow travel. Border and wetland detours may use narrower roads.
Accessible travel
Step-free conditions vary across stations, old-city streets, religious complexes and heritage sites. Ask the exact operator about entrances, wheelchairs, lifts and vehicle drop-off rather than treating “accessible” as a property of the whole destination.
Timing
Do not combine a fixed flight or train with a border ceremony, distant wetland or major festival on the same tight day. Current security and crowd controls can change movement without notice.
