Practical information for visiting Amritsar

Connectivity & Internet

Amritsar's airport is the principal air gateway for western Punjab. Airlines and routes change, so use the airline and Airports Authority of India rather than a static list of destinations.

Indian Railways and intercity buses connect Amritsar with other Punjab centres and major cities. Verify the exact train, station, bus stand and service status before departure.

Roads connect the city with Jalandhar, Lahore-facing Attari and other parts of Punjab. The international border cannot be treated as an ordinary local crossing; visa, customs and current cross-border service rules apply.

Phone data is broadly useful in the city, but keep tickets, hotel addresses, identity details and emergency contacts available offline. Temporary restrictions can occur in sensitive border or security circumstances.

Stay safe (2026 security update)

Use ordinary city precautions in dense shrine approaches, bazaars, railway areas and festival crowds. Keep valuables secure, agree on a meeting point and use official ticket or transport channels.

At Attari and anywhere near the international border, follow police and Border Security Force instructions immediately. Do not photograph checkpoints, military positions, documents or restricted infrastructure, and never approach an unapproved crossing.

Political demonstrations, religious processions or security operations can alter traffic and access. Avoid confrontation and follow local authorities and site managers.

Heat, winter fog, air pollution, lightning and monsoon waterlogging are practical risks. Check live warnings and leave margin around flights, trains and the border ceremony.

India's integrated emergency number is 112.

Health considerations

From April through June, heat is the main seasonal health risk. Begin early, carry safe water, use shade and stop for dizziness, confusion, headache or unusual weakness. Seek urgent help for severe symptoms.

Winter fog and poor air quality can affect respiratory conditions. Use current CPCB readings and personal medical advice rather than assuming cool weather is healthy for everyone.

Choose sealed or reliably filtered water and freshly cooked food from busy premises. Langar kitchens operate at extraordinary scale, but visitors should still manage personal allergies and medical dietary needs themselves.

Use mosquito repellent during and after the monsoon. Discuss vaccines, medicines, insurance and individual risks with a qualified clinician before travel.

Do not touch or feed dogs, macaques or other mammals. Obtain prompt medical assessment after any bite or scratch. Call 112 for urgent police, fire or medical assistance.

Emergency information

Dial 112 for urgent police, fire, medical or rescue assistance in Amritsar. Give a precise gate, lane, bazaar, hotel, station, shrine entrance, museum or border-road landmark and share a map pin when possible.

Within Harmandir Sahib, the airport, railway station, museum, fort or Attari venue, alert responsible on-site staff or security as well. Follow evacuation, crowd and restricted-area instructions.

For airline, train, bus or border-ceremony disruption, contact the current operator or authority. A hotel or reseller cannot overrule an operational or security decision.

During heat, fog, severe pollution, lightning or heavy rain, follow IMD, CPCB and local instructions. Keep identification copies, insurance, medication details, accommodation and consular contacts offline.
