Discover Mumbai
A concise introduction to Mumbai, its geography, history and culture.
Introduction
Mumbai, capital of Maharashtra, is a coastal metropolis made from islands, reclamation, harbour trade, railways and migration. Its most revealing route joins the Gateway of India and Colaba to the Fort district, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and the Art Deco curve of Marine Drive. A ferry journey to the Elephanta Caves adds a much older layer.
This is not a compact monument city. Markets, shrines, museums, cinema, working railways, seafronts and protected forest are spread along a long north–south urban form. Plan by district, respect commuter peaks and give monsoon conditions real authority over the day. Mumbai rewards travellers who treat it as a living city in India, not a backdrop of isolated landmarks.

Frequently asked questions
How many days does Mumbai need? Three days covers a south-Mumbai heritage route, one museum or neighbourhood thread and either Elephanta or a suburban route. Four or five days gives the city's distances room.
When is the best time? November through February is driest and generally easiest for long outdoor days. June through September requires a monsoon-ready plan.
Can I walk between the main sights? Walk within Colaba, Fort, Kala Ghoda and parts of Marine Drive. Use rail, Metro, bus or road transport between distant clusters.
Is Elephanta a quick add-on? No. Ferry timing, the walk from the jetty, site access and the return sailing make it a dedicated half or full day.
Which airport terminal do I use? Mumbai airport has T1 and T2. Check the terminal with the airline before departure and allow time for the transfer if it changes.
Is the Prince of Wales Museum still its name? Its current name is Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, usually shortened to CSMVS.
Should I take suburban rail at rush hour? Avoid the busiest periods with luggage or if intense platform and carriage crowding would be difficult for you.
What language is most useful? Marathi is Maharashtra's official language. English and Hindi are widely useful in visitor settings; written addresses prevent confusion.
