Sanjay Gandhi National Park
Discover Sanjay Gandhi National Park
Last updated on October 20, 2026Introduction
Sanjay Gandhi National Park protects about 87 square kilometres of forest, hills, streams and lake catchments within the Mumbai metropolitan area. Its Borivali entrance leads to public recreation areas, while deeper zones remain managed wildlife habitat.
The park also contains the Kanheri Caves, a large Buddhist rock-cut complex developed over many centuries. Nature and archaeology therefore share the same landscape but follow separate activity schedules and access rules.
This is not one attraction with one ticket and one timetable. Safaris, caves, boating, cycling or other activities may operate independently, and the official park site states that most attractions close on Monday.
Geography and Significance
The park rises from Borivali into forested basalt hills with streams, seasonal waterfalls and the catchments of Tulsi and Vihar lakes. Mumbai's built edge presses around much of the boundary.
Monsoon rain changes the colour, water flow and trail conditions dramatically. In the dry season, open ground and forest structure become more visible, but heat and dust increase.
Biodiversity
Maharashtra Tourism describes a landscape of moist and dry deciduous forest supporting extensive plant, bird, butterfly, mammal and reptile diversity. The park's urban location makes that habitat valuable and vulnerable at the same time.
Remain on authorised routes, carry waste out, keep noise low and do not collect plants, stones or insects. A short detour from a visitor road can cross into habitat or a restricted conservation zone.
Wildlife
Leopards, deer, macaques and many smaller species live in the park, but a visit never guarantees a sighting. Stay inside authorised vehicles where required, keep distance on trails and report rather than approach an animal near a public area.
Never feed macaques or deer. Feeding changes movement and aggression, concentrates animals around roads and increases risk to both people and wildlife.
Getting In and Getting Around
Main entrance
The principal visitor entrance is at Borivali. Travel time across Mumbai can be substantial, so treat the park as its own day or half-day rather than an add-on to South Mumbai.
Inside
Activities use different roads, trails, vehicles and tickets. Kanheri involves slopes and steps; nature routes may be uneven or seasonally closed. Contact the park for mobility needs and confirm the exact activity point before arrival.
Frequently asked questions
How large is the park?
Maharashtra Tourism describes approximately 87 square kilometres.
Are the Kanheri Caves inside it?
Yes. They are a separate archaeological attraction within the park landscape.
Is the park closed on Monday?
The official site says most visitor attractions close on Monday, with identified exceptions; verify the exact activity.

Can one ticket cover everything?
Do not assume so. Activities publish separate schedules and charges.
