Architecture

The National Theatre was deliberately designed in a Neoclassical style modeled on the grand opera houses of Europe, a conscious departure from Costa Rica's own vernacular architecture at the time, reflecting the ambitions of the coffee elite who funded it. Its facade, foyer, and auditorium were built and decorated largely with imported European materials and craftsmanship — marble, statuary, and painted ceilings among them — assembled to create an interior that would not look out of place in Paris or Vienna.
