National Theatre of Costa Rica

The National Theatre of Costa Rica (Teatro Nacional de Costa Rica) is San José's grand 19th-century opera house and the country's most celebrated historic building, completed in 1897 and funded in large part by a tax on coffee exports — a fitting origin for a nation whose modern prosperity was built substantially on that same crop.

Modeled after the opera houses of Europe, the theatre remains a working performance venue today, hosting the National Symphony Orchestra and touring productions, alongside its role as one of San José's most-visited landmarks in its own right.
