Events drive Boston's hotel prices more than the season does, and three periods matter.
The Boston Marathon, on Patriots' Day in April. Organised by the Boston Athletic Association, with a field of about 30,000 runners; the next edition is . The city effectively stops. Book months ahead or avoid it.
Graduation weekends in May. With more than 350,000 college students in the city, commencement season fills hotels across Boston and Cambridge simultaneously. It is the least-anticipated price spike on the calendar because it is not a tourist event.
The Fourth of July on the Esplanade. The Hatch Shell, the outdoor concert venue beside the Charles River Esplanade, is the focus.
The sporting calendar is the constant. Red Sox home games at Fenway through the summer, and Celtics, Bruins and Patriots in their seasons, each of which moves crowds and prices on the day.
Autumn brings the Head of the Charles and foliage season — rowing on the river in October, and the regional leaf-peeping traffic that fills rooms well beyond the city.
