Boston's attractions divide into three groups, and they want different amounts of time.
The Revolutionary sites are mostly small, mostly free or cheap, and close together — the Old State House, Faneuil Hall, the Paul Revere House, the Old North Church, the Bunker Hill Monument. Individually they take twenty minutes. Strung together on the Freedom Trail they make a day.
The great museums are the opposite: the Museum of Fine Arts and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum each deserve most of a day, and the Gardner in particular is a single collection in a single building that cannot be hurried.
The city itself is the third group, and the one visitors under-rate — Boston Common and the Public Garden, the Esplanade along the Charles, the Harbor Islands, Fenway Park, and the neighbourhoods that are not on any trail.
