The bovolo itself
Bovolo is Venetian for snail shell, and the staircase is exactly that: a cylindrical shaft of brick and Istrian stone wound with 80 steps, its outer face opened into five tiers of round-arched loggias so the stair is a colonnade rather than a wall. It is the only structure of its kind in Venice.
The belvedere
The climb ends in a small domed belvedere, and the view from it is the point: a rooftop-level panorama over the altane and chimney pots of San Marco, with the Campanile, the Frari and the domes of the Salute placed around the horizon. Because it is low, the city reads as texture rather than as a plan -- the opposite of the view from a bell tower.
Why it exists
An external stair was not eccentricity. Venetian sites are narrow and every square metre inside a palace was valuable, so pushing the stair out into the courtyard bought interior space -- and let a family without a Grand Canal frontage make a display of its wealth vertically instead.
