The auditorium

Five tiers of boxes curve around a horseshoe plan in gold leaf, painted stucco, and red velvet, with a ceiling medallion and central chandelier above. The gilding is deliberately dense: in a house lit originally by candles, the gold was what carried light back into the room.

The royal box

The central box, enlarged under Austrian rule and again for the Italian monarchy, projects further into the auditorium than the others and is the one point from which the horseshoe geometry reads as fully symmetrical.

The Sale Apollinee

The reception rooms off the foyer, named for Apollo, survived the 1996 fire comparatively intact and retain original neoclassical decoration -- a useful reference for how much of the auditorium itself is reconstruction rather than survival.
