The elongated, irregular shape of the square -- wider at one end, narrowing toward the other -- reflects its gradual, informal growth over centuries rather than a single planned design, unlike Venice's more geometrically composed campi.
A handful of market stalls still operate on the square most mornings, a continuation of its long-standing role as a produce and fish market for the surrounding Dorsoduro neighborhood.
By evening, the square's bars and cafes fill with students from nearby Ca' Foscari University, giving it one of the more active aperitivo scenes in Venice, especially in the warmer months.
