Dayton’s attractions are almost all connected to flight, and most of them are free.
The National Museum of the United States Air Force, on Wright-Patterson Air Force Base north-east of the city, is the largest military aviation museum in the world and charges nothing. Allow most of a day; the presidential aircraft gallery alone takes an hour.
The Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park is spread across several sites — the Wright brothers’ bicycle shop and interpretive centre, the Huffman Prairie flying field and its interpretive centre, the Wright company factory and the Paul Laurence Dunbar house — all free and run by the National Park Service.
Carillon Historical Park charges and holds the original Wright Flyer III alongside a reconstructed nineteenth-century village.
The Dayton Art Institute is free for the permanent collection.
A car is needed; the sites are spread across the metropolitan area.
