Introduction
New Jersey is the most densely populated state in the country, and it is also mostly farmland, pine forest and beach. Both things are true, which is the thing people get wrong about it.
It sits between two major cities and is routinely dismissed as the space between them. In practice it has 130 miles of Atlantic coast, a million-acre pine wilderness in the middle of the eastern seaboard, and more Revolutionary War battlefields than any other state.
The shore is the state's summer identity, and it is not one beach but a chain of very different towns: Victorian Cape May at the southern tip, the boardwalk resorts in the middle, and quieter barrier islands between them.
It also has a food culture that residents defend with real heat, and a north-south divide over what to call a breakfast meat.
