Exeter is a walking town with two significant attractions and a good main street.
The Phillips Exeter Academy Library is the architectural draw. It is a working school library, and public access depends on the academic calendar and current policy — check before travelling, and do not assume you can simply walk in.
The American Independence Museum is ticketed, open seasonally, and shows the Ladd-Gilman House and the Folsom Tavern with genuinely important documents.
Free: the town centre and bandstand, Swasey Parkway along the river, the falls, and the academy grounds.
Within half an hour: Portsmouth’s Strawbery Banke, the Hampton and Rye beaches, and the Great Bay estuary reserve.
The town is compact and best done on foot; a car is needed for anything beyond it.
