Introduction
Georgia is the largest state east of the Mississippi River and runs from the southern end of the Appalachians to the Atlantic, which gives it mountains, farmland, swamp and barrier islands within one border.
Atlanta is the capital of the modern South — the centre of the civil rights movement, and now of a film and music industry large enough to have changed the city. Savannah, on the coast, is its opposite: a 1733 grid of garden squares under live oaks, and one of the most intact historic centres in America.
The coast holds the Golden Isles, a chain of barrier islands with wild horses and no bridges to some of them, and the interior holds the Okefenokee, one of the largest intact freshwater swamps on the continent.
It is also hot. Georgia in July is a genuine planning constraint, not a detail.
