Discover Florida

Introduction

Florida is a 450-mile peninsula between two seas, and almost none of it is more than an hour from salt water. It is also the flattest state in the country — its highest point is 345 feet.

Most visitors come for one of three things and rarely mix them: the theme parks in the centre, the beaches on either coast, or Miami, which is effectively a Latin American capital with Art Deco on the seafront.

What gets overlooked is the wild part. The Everglades is a slow-moving freshwater river sixty miles wide, the Florida Keys trail a hundred miles into the Gulf along a single road, and the springs of the north run clear at 22°C every day of the year.

Seasons here are inverted: winter is the high season, and summer is hot, wet and cheap.
