Introduction
Connecticut is the third-smallest state and one of the oldest, and most of what it offers sits within an hour of everything else.
Its shape is simple: a sheltered coast along Long Island Sound, a broad river valley up the middle, and hills at either end. New Haven has Yale and the country's best-argued pizza; Hartford has the oldest public art museum in the United States and the house where Mark Twain wrote his major books; the southeast coast has whaling history and two of the largest casinos in the world.
It is a wealthy state — the highest per-capita income in the country — and that shows in what has been preserved rather than in what is flashy.
The trade-off is that Connecticut is rarely a destination in itself. It sits between New York and Boston, and most people pass through it. Slowing down is the entire point.
