San Diego
Discover San Diego
A concise introduction to San Diego, its geography, history and culture.
Introduction
San Diego is a Pacific port city arranged around a sheltered bay, coastal mesas and deep urban canyons, with Mexico immediately to the south. Visitors come for beaches, Balboa Park, museums, wildlife institutions and a climate that keeps outdoor plans possible through much of the year. The deeper character comes from Kumeyaay continuity, Californio and Mexican history, military and maritime work, and neighbourhoods tied to a living border region.
The city is broad rather than compact. Downtown, the bay, Balboa Park, the beaches, La Jolla and inland reserves work as separate clusters. Choose one or two areas per day, use the Trolley and buses where they fit, and treat the coast as an active natural environment rather than a backdrop.
Frequently asked questions
How many days does San Diego need? Three days cover Balboa Park, the bay and one coast cluster. Four or five days make room for neighbourhood culture, Point Loma, museums and transport between distant areas.
Do I need a car? Not for a focused downtown, bay, Balboa Park and Trolley itinerary. A car becomes useful when combining La Jolla, Point Loma, several beaches and inland reserves, but parking adds cost and delay.
When is the best time? March through May and October into early November usually offer the best balance of mild weather and manageable demand. Summer is warmer but busier; winter is mild and wetter.
Is the ocean warm? It is the cool Pacific, not tropical water. Comfort varies by person and season, while rip currents and surf matter more than temperature. Swim near a lifeguard.
Can I visit Tijuana as a day trip? Yes, but it is an international crossing. Confirm passport and entry requirements, insurance, return queues and last transport before leaving San Diego.
Are SeaWorld, LEGOLAND and the Safari Park all downtown? No. SeaWorld San Diego is near Mission Bay, the San Diego Zoo Safari Park is near Escondido, and LEGOLAND California is in Carlsbad. Treat each as a substantial separate outing.
How do airport transfers work? Route 992 runs between both terminals and downtown, while the free San Diego Flyer links the airport with Old Town Transit Center. Check current hours for late-night travel.
