Responsible Travel Tips
Santander's adventure-tourism industry has grown quickly, and not every paragliding, rafting, or caving operator carries the same level of real safety certification -- choosing an operator with visible, verifiable safety practices (proper equipment, trained guides, sensible weather calls) matters more here than in most destinations, given the activities involved.
In Barichara and the department's other colonial towns, supporting local artisans directly -- stoneworkers, weavers, and the guitar-makers Barichara is particularly known for -- puts tourism income directly into the hands of the craftspeople keeping these traditions alive, rather than routing it entirely through outside tour operators.
When to Visit Santander
Santander follows Colombia's typical two-season tropical pattern rather than four traditional seasons: a drier period (roughly December-March) and a wetter one (roughly April-November), with a shorter secondary dry spell around July-August. The dry months are generally the most reliable for outdoor adventure activities like paragliding and rafting, though the department's valley towns stay warm year-round regardless of month.
