How to Get Around Luzon

Getting Around

Manila's LRT and MRT light-rail lines provide the metro area's core rail transit, supplemented everywhere by jeepneys and tricycles, the Philippines' most heavily used forms of public road transport, developed from surplus American military jeeps after World War II. Long-distance buses, including operators like Victory Liner, connect Manila to Baguio and other Luzon destinations, though schedules and fares are best confirmed directly with operators given frequent service changes.

Reaching Sagada and Banaue in the Cordillera, and Donsol in the Bicol Region, generally means a long-distance bus or van to the nearest hub followed by local transport, rather than a single direct connection from Manila; travel times to these more remote destinations can run 8-12 hours by road. Domestic flights connect Manila to regional airports closer to some of these destinations, cutting overland travel time substantially.

Verified against Light Rail Transit Authority (Manila), September 2026.

In Manila. LRT/MRT light rail: a Standard Stored Value Card costs ₱30 plus a ₱14 minimum load, accepted across LRT Lines 1 and 2 and MRT Line 3. Jeepneys and tricycles cover most other routes.

To Baguio. Long-distance buses (including Victory Liner) run from Manila; journey time is several hours by road.

To Sagada and Banaue. Reached via long-distance bus or van to a Cordillera hub, then local transport; expect a full day of travel from Manila given the mountain roads.

To Donsol. Reached via Legazpi or another Bicol Region hub, with local transport for the final leg; domestic flights from Manila to the region cut overland time significantly.

Entry. Visa-exempt visitors can enter the Philippines for up to 30 days without a visa, but must first register on the government's e-travel system and show the resulting QR code on arrival.
