Titian’s Assumption

Painted around 1535 for the Nichesola Chapel, and still there. A quieter, more grounded treatment than his famous Frari version in Venice.

Nicolò’s porch

With Roland and Oliver on the jambs -- Charlemagne's paladins carved on a cathedral, and among the earliest depictions of them in Italian sculpture.

The baptistery font

San Giovanni in Fonte's octagonal font is cut from one block of marble, with carved reliefs around its sides.

The Biblioteca Capitolare

Manuscripts kept and copied here since roughly the fifth century, including the palimpsest that preserved the Institutes of Gaius -- the text that transformed how Roman law is understood.
