The boat to Venice

Around 35 minutes to San Marco across open lagoon, with Burano, Murano and Torcello reachable too. The approach to Venice by water is the correct way to arrive.

Punta Sabbioni is the western tip of a long, narrow sandbar peninsula with the Adriatic on one side and the Venetian Lagoon on the other.

In front of it is the Lido inlet, one of the three openings through which the sea enters the lagoon and the tide moves in and out.

The point itself is low, sandy and largely artificial in its present shape, armoured with breakwaters and the works of the flood barrier.

Behind, the peninsula carries dune fragments and pine on the seaward side and salt marsh, channels and market gardens on the lagoon side -- one of the few places where the two systems can be seen within a few hundred metres of each other.
