The lagoon

Shallow, brackish and still, behind the dune ridge -- the abandoned arm of the Piave, and the reason the place exists.

The undeveloped beach

Sand, dune and no buildings. The only stretch like it on the Venetian Riviera.

The pine wood

A real coastal pine and holm-oak belt behind the lagoon, of the kind that once ran the length of this shore.

The birds

Herons, egrets and waders on the lagoon, with more on passage in spring and autumn.

The lagoon sits between Eraclea Mare and the mouth of the Piave, on a low, flat, sandy coast at the edge of the Venetian Riviera.

Its structure is the classic one for this shore, and here it is complete: open beach, then a dune ridge, then the shallow brackish lagoon behind it, then the pine wood, then reclaimed farmland inland.

The water is brackish, fed by seepage and tidal exchange rather than by the river that made it, and it varies in salinity through the year.

The land behind is reclaimed marsh, drained in the twentieth century and lying barely above sea level.
