Introduction
Marostica is a walled town at the foot of the Asiago plateau, twenty minutes west of Bassano. Two castles hold it: the Castello Inferiore on the main square, and the Castello Superiore on the hill above, joined by a wall that climbs straight up the slope between them.
Every even-numbered September the main square becomes a chessboard. The Partita a Scacchi is played with living pieces -- several hundred people in fifteenth-century costume -- and it is the reason most visitors have heard of the town.
The rest of the year Marostica is quiet, and known in Italy for something else entirely: the Ciliegia di Marostica, the protected cherry grown on the slopes around it.
