Castello Superiore Historical Timeline
Last updated on September 7, 2026Origins
A fortification held this summit well before the present walls; the hill commands the point where the plateau meets the plain.
Turning points
Cansignorio della Scala of Verona built the castle and its connecting walls between 1372 and 1387, tying the summit to the town below in a single defensive system.
Influential people
Marostica passed to Venice in 1404, after which the fortress had no further military purpose.
Cultural evolution
It decayed slowly rather than being demolished, which is why the circuit survives even though the buildings inside do not.
Present-day significance
The walls and grounds are open, and a restaurant occupies part of the enclosure, with terraces inside the medieval walls.
