For the thermal water, which is the thing no other resort on this coast has. Hot mineral water rises from beneath the town, and the spa built on it runs well outside the beach season — so Bibione is one of the few Adriatic resorts with a reason to visit in October or May.

For a noticeably cleaner beach. Bibione restricted smoking on the sand in 2016, the first in Italy to do it, and the policy has since been copied widely. It holds Blue Flag certification, and the difference from comparable Adriatic beaches is visible rather than theoretical.

And for the Tagliamento mouth immediately east — lagoon, dune and nesting birds, the undeveloped edge of an otherwise entirely built-up coast. If you want the beach holiday with somewhere wild to walk, this is the end of the riviera that has it.

If you have a week

Beach through the morning, spa on the day the weather turns — which is the advantage of being here rather than at a resort where a grey day means an arcade. Cycle east at least once.

If you are coming out of season

Come for the spa and treat the sea as scenery. May and October are much cheaper, the thermal facilities run a longer season than anything else in town, and the beach is entirely yours to walk.

If you want what others miss

The Tagliamento mouth. Almost everyone stays on the concessioned sand; a few kilometres east there is lagoon, dune and birdlife, and in spring the difference between a managed beach and a living shoreline is obvious.

Bibione's population multiplies enormously in July and August, and its water, waste and traffic systems run at capacity. June and September are better for the town and better for the visit.

The dune fragments and pine strip at the edges of the resort are fenced and protected; dune vegetation is what holds the beach in place, so stay off it.

The Tagliamento mouth east of the resort is a sensitive lagoon and dune system with nesting birds. Keep to marked routes, particularly in spring and early summer.

Respect the beach smoking restrictions — they are the reason the sand here is noticeably cleaner than on comparable Adriatic beaches.

Cycle rather than drive within the resort; summer traffic is the town's main environmental problem.

June and September are the best: warm sea, everything open, and considerably quieter than the peak.

July and August are the height of the German and Austrian holidays as well as the Italian ones, and the resort is at its fullest and most expensive.

May and October work if you are coming for the spa rather than the sea, and are much cheaper.

Winter is largely closed apart from the thermal facilities.
