Piazza Libertà
Last updated on September 7, 2026Overview
Piazza Libertà is the middle of three linked squares that form Bassano's centre, running one into the next without a break. Arcaded on both sides, watched over by a Venetian lion on a column and the frescoed front of the Loggia del Comune, it is where the town actually spends its evenings.
Quick Facts
- Type: Square/Plazza
- Local name: Piazza Libertà (vedi la pagina italiana)
- Three squares in one: Piazzotto Montevecchio, Piazza Libertà and Piazza Garibaldi run into each other without a break, which is why the centre feels like a series of rooms.
- The Venetian lion: On its column, the standard statement of sovereignty Venice left in every mainland town it governed.
Visit Responsibly
This is a working civic square in a town that lives here rather than performs, and the cafés under the arcades serve residents first. Sitting down for an hour puts money directly into the centre.
The market is a genuine food market rather than a visitor one -- worth buying from rather than only photographing.

Plan Your Visit
Open public square, free and always accessible. Cafés line the arcades, and the market fills it on Thursday and Saturday mornings.
Ten minutes' walk from the station, five uphill from the bridge.
When to Visit
Early evening, when the arcades fill and the town comes out. Market mornings are the other good time, though they hide the architecture.
Summer evenings bring the Opera Estate Festival, which uses the square and the surrounding courtyards as venues.
