Origins

The summit was fortified early; the present walls are medieval, raised over earlier defences on a site that had been in military use since antiquity.

Turning points

It served as the citadel for the town below through the centuries when Asolo mattered strategically, controlling the gap between the Piave and the Brenta.

Influential people

Under Caterina Cornaro after 1489 the town's centre of gravity shifted decisively downhill to her castle, and the Rocca's role faded.

Cultural evolution

It was abandoned rather than demolished, and the walls survived because no one needed the stone badly enough.

Present-day significance

Restored and opened to the public, it is now essentially a viewpoint with medieval walls around it, and the destination of the town's best walk.
