A concise introduction to Gaiole in Chianti, its geography, history and culture.
Introduction
Gaiole in Chianti is a comune of 2,454 inhabitants in the province of Siena, its 128.99 square kilometres running from the Monti del Chianti down towards the valley of the Arbia. The capoluogo stands at 356 metres — markedly lower than Radda at 535 or Castellina at 578 — and the comune reaches from 215 metres near Pianella to 839 metres near Monteluco.
It was a market, not a fortress, and that is why it sits where it does. Gaiole's history is tied to its position as a road junction between the Chianti and the upper Valdarno, which made it the market for the surrounding castles. From 1086, when it is first recorded in a charter of the Badia a Coltibuono, the inhabitants of Vertine, Montegrossi and San Donato in Perano came down to the valley floor along the Massellone torrent to trade.
The castles are the attraction, and there are thirteen of them. A Strada dei Castelli winds through the hills; among them Brolio, where Bettino Ricasoli defined the blend for Chianti Classico in 1874, and Meleto, which keeps an eighteenth-century theatre with seven original stage sets. The Badia a Coltibuono, founded in 1049, is the oldest institution in the comune.
And one modern thing has made Gaiole famous. L'Eroica was born here in 1997 with 92 riders and is held on the first Sunday in October, over the white roads of the Chianti, the Crete Senesi and the Val d'Orcia.
Frequently asked questions
Why is Gaiole lower than Radda and Castellina?
Because it was a market, not a fortress. The capoluogo sits at 356 metres on the valley floor, at the road junction between the Chianti and the upper Valdarno, where the people of the surrounding castles came down to trade.
Is this where Chianti Classico was invented?
The blend was defined here. At Castello di Brolio, in 1874, Baron Bettino Ricasoli — who was also mayor of Gaiole for many years — settled after years of experiment on the uvaggio for Chianti Classico that the production rules followed almost a century later.
What is the Strada dei Castelli?
A Castle Road winding through the comune's hills past its medieval fortifications. Thirteen castles are listed in Gaiole's territory, among them Brolio, Meleto, Cacchiano, Monteluco, Tornano and Vertine.
When is the Eroica?
The first Sunday in October, at Gaiole. It was born here in 1997 with 92 riders, and runs over the white roads of the Sienese Chianti, the Crete Senesi and the Val d'Orcia on antique bicycles.
Which castles can I actually go into?
Meleto is explicitly open to visits on payment. Brolio and the Badia a Coltibuono are working estates with hospitality attached. Most of the others are private and not open. Check before driving out.
Why does this page give no temperatures?
Because the nearest long-run weather station is at Montevarchi, in the Valdarno and separated from Gaiole by a ridge, and the record carrying those figures withdraws them as unrepresentative. Quoting them would be precise and wrong.
Is there anything in the town itself?
The street-square of via Ricasoli, which has been the heart of Gaiole for centuries, and the parish church of San Sigismondo, a neo-Gothic building faced in pietra serena except for its facade. Twenty minutes, honestly.
